Do I need to be tested for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia?
Good sexual health is a vital component of our overall health and well-being. Often, in the past, maintaining good sexual health had negative connotations of dingy GUM clinics or embarrassing trips to the GP. These days, however, it is easier than ever before to be checked out. In the majority of cases there is no need to even see a doctor face to face. A test can be carried out in the privacy and comfort of your own home, the results posted confidentially online and any required treatments sent out to you by next day delivery
Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are two of the most common STIs in the UK and can affect men and women. If you are sexually active, you have a new partner, multiple partners or have had a recent situation where you have had unprotected sex, then it is advisable to get tested for these two infections.
When should I be tested?
Having unprotected sex puts you at risk of contracting gonorrhoea and chlamydia and a number of other STIs.
We recommend that you wait for at least 2 weeks after the point of risk before having a test for gonorrhea and chlamydia as it can take this long for both infections to show up in any test. You can get tested sooner but if the result is negative then we have to recommend a retest when the 2 weeks point is reached.
How will my test be delivered to me?
- If you order your combined Gonorrhoea and Chlamydia test by 5 pm then we will send your test kit out to you on the same day.
- You can chose your Gonorrhea and Chlamydia test kit to be sent either by first class mail or by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which is guaranteed for the next day by 1.00 pm.
What will the test detect?
The test kit will be able to detect the presence of gonorrhea and chlamydia. It will not be able to detect other STIs. If you wish to be tested for the full range of STIs then you will need to have a full sexual health screen.
How does the test work?
We will send you out a combined gonorrhea and chlamydia test kit. Men are required to provide a urine sample and women can provide either a urine sample or a vaginal swab.
How do I get my results back?
We will post your results onto a secure part of our website to which only you will have access using a secure log in. This guarantees you complete confidentiality and peace of mind. The results are normally available for you to view within 24 hours of your sample arriving at our lab.
What happens if my test comes back positive?
If your test comes back positive you will need to be treated. We are able to send you out the medications that you require, though you should note that the advised treatment for gonorrhea is an intramuscular injection but we can provide an alternative if you cannot see a doctor face to face for the injection. We will arrange for this to be sent to you by over night delivery.
Are the results reliable?
Your results will be extremely reliable. We use The Doctor's Laboratory (TDL) in London to process all of the samples that we receive. The Doctor's Laboratory is one of the most highly respected pathology laboratories in the country. TDL is fully accredited.
About Gonorrhea and Chlamydia
Gonorrhea is an extremely common STI that affects both men and women. It can affect the genitals, the rectum and the throat and can be caught by having unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex with someone who is already infected.
Chlamydia is one of the UK's most common STIs. It can lead to serious health problems if left untreated. Someone who is infected with chlamydia may well not display any symptoms at all and will, therefore, not know that they are infected.
