More Information
Do I need to be tested for Gonorrhea?
Most of us now accept that our sexual health is a vital part of our overall health and wellbeing. Being tested for STIs has never been easier. It is now possible to buy a full STI screening kit online, at the click of a button, so there is now no need to travel to your local GUM clinic or your GP to be tested or to suffer the embarrassment of sitting in a waiting room to be seen.
Gonorrhoea is one of the most common STIs in the UK and affects both men and women. If you are sexually active, and have had a recent situation where you have had unprotected sex, it is a good idea to get tested for this infection.
When should I be tested?
Having unprotected sex puts you at risk of contracting gonorrhoea. It is an infection that affects men and women equally.
We recommend that you wait for a week after the point of risk before having a test for gonorrhea as it can take this long for the infection to show up.
How will my test be delivered to me?
- Order your Gonorrhoea test by 5 pm, and we will send your test kit out to you on the same day.
- You can choose for your Gonorrhea test kit to be sent out by either first class mail or by Royal Mail Special Next Day Delivery.
What will the test detect?
The test kit will be able to detect the presence of gonorrhoea. It will not be able to detect other STIs so if you want to have a full sexual health screen or test for other specific STIs then we recommend you getting either a combination test (for gonorrhea and chlamydia) or a full STI screen.
How does the test work?
We will send you out a Gonorrhoea test kit. Men are required to provide a urine sample and women can provide either a urine sample or a vaginal swab.
How do I get my results back?
We will post your results onto a secure part of our website to which only you will have access using a secure log in. This guarantees you complete confidentiality and peace of mind. The results are normally available for you to view within 24 hours of your sample arriving at our lab. We have a 4 hour results option if speed is very important to you.
What happens if my test comes back positive?
If your test comes back positive you will need to be treated. The current recommendation for gonorrhoea is an intramuscular injection of Ceftriaxone and oral Azithromycin. If, however, you are unable to have the injection, we will arrange an alternative treatment for you in pill form. We will arrange for this to be sent to you by over night delivery.
Are the results reliable?
Your results will be extremely reliable. The laboratory that we use to process our results is The Doctor's Laboratory (TDL) in London. The Doctor's Laboratory is one of the most highly respected pathology laboratories in the country. TDL is fully accredited.
